Orthopaedic Surgery Residents
From the strong resident culture to close relationships with faculty, there are many reasons that residents choose the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Training at Atrium Health. Our residents benefit from our mentorship model where residents are exposed to all subspecialty areas of orthopaedics while working closely with our internationally-renowned faculty.
Residents receive a curriculum built around the 6 core competencies, with special emphasis on professionalism and communication skills. The program consists of:
- 4 full orthopaedic clinical years
- 1 multidisciplinary internship year
- One-on-one training with board-certified, fellowship-trained specialists
- Large clinical volume
- Graduated responsibility in the operating room

All the training locations below are within a 5-minute drive of each other, which facilitates smooth transitions from one rotation to another.

Carolinas Medical Center
Carolinas Medical Center (CMC) is one of the busiest trauma centers in the country and houses the Levine Cancer Institute. This campus is where our residents train to learn state-of-the-art care for orthopaedic trauma (both adult and pediatric) and orthopaedic oncology with multiple subspecialty trained surgeons. Hand and spine trauma are also treated at this location with our specialists in those fields.

Atrium Health Mercy
Atrium Health Mercy is an adult tertiary acute care hospital where residents spend much of their time on their adult reconstruction, foot and ankle, sports medicine and spine rotations. This facility also houses the administrative offices of the Atrium Health Musculoskeletal Institute as well as a lounge and work areas exclusively used by the orthopaedic surgery residents.

OrthoCarolina
OrthoCarolina is one of the largest, most comprehensive orthopaedic practices in the nation. Residents will engage patients in the outpatient setting at OrthoCarolina offices on their pediatrics, adult reconstruction, hand, sports medicine and spine rotations. They are also exposed to the private practice administrative side of orthopaedic surgery here. These offices are all located in areas immediately around the other Atrium Health facilities listed.

Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital
Levine Children's Hospital, located on the campus of CMC, is home to the region's only dedicated children's emergency department and pediatric Level I trauma center. All our inpatient pediatric orthopaedic training takes place at this facility with multiple subspecialty trained pediatric orthopaedic surgeons.

Application Criteria
Prospective residents of the Orthopaedic Surgery program must submit the following required documents:
- 3 letters of recommendation
- Dean’s Letter
- Personal Statement
- United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Scores
- Transcripts
