Carolinas Hernia Institute, part of Carolinas HealthCare System, provides innovative treatment for all types of hernias. Our doctors are dedicated to providing excellence in hernia repair, and we continually invest in research to offer the most up-to-date surgical techniques.

Carolinas Hernia Institute offers the following hernia treatment options:

  • Suture Repair: Simple stitches to repair a minor hernia.
  • Open Repair with Mesh: Surgeons reposition protruding organs or tissue through an incision (an opening made to your abdomen) and use a mesh patch to repair the hernia. This promotes healthy tissue growth, reduces pain and creates a strong permanent repair, reducing the chance of hernia recurrence.
  • Laparoscopic with Mesh: Similar to an open repair, this requires only two to four very small incisions, which could mean shorter recovery time, fewer complications and less pain for you. But it’s not appropriate for every repair. Our doctors work with you to figure out the best treatment for you. Carolinas HealthCare System’s Carolinas Medical Center has a nationally recognized program called CLASP (Carolinas Laparoscopic and Advanced Surgery Program) that offers specialized surgery options, such as laparoscopic surgery.

Our CLASP surgeons train and mentor doctors across the country in the latest techniques in minimally invasive surgery. Patients also come from all over the world for CLASP services through Global Patient Services at Carolinas HealthCare System.
  • Plastic Surgery with Hernia Repair: In patients with very large hernias and over-hanging skin, excess skin and tissue may be removed to decrease the risk of infection after surgery. Our plastic surgeon works closely with the surgical team to ensure the most pleasing result for you.
