Carolinas HealthCare System’s Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute has a comprehensive heart valve program staffed by nationally recognized cardiac experts who provide you with a full range of state-of-the-art treatments:

  • Among the first in the United States to perform transcatheter aortic valve replacements (TAVR) for patients with severe aortic stenosis following FDA approval. And, even before FDA approval through clinical trials.
  • One of the most experienced centers in the United States in performing nonsurgical repair of mitral valve regurgitation.
  • One of the only centers in the Southeast that performs balloon mitral valvuloplasty, using a catheter to open the narrowed valve in mitral stenosis.
  • The only center in the region nationally recognized for expertise in congenital pulmonary valve surgery.
  • Valve repair or replacement therapy
  • Traditional and minimally invasive surgical approaches to valvular heart disease

Heart valve disease may affect any of the four valves in the heart: aortic, mitral, pulmonary or tricuspid. These valves open and close to keep blood flowing through the heart's four chambers. Defects in the valves may be present at birth (congenital), or they may result from diseases such as rheumatic fever, atrial infection, high blood pressure or a heart attack.

Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute offers you the latest in advanced diagnostic services to help detect heart valve defects, including 3D transesophageal echocardiography, cardiac CT angiography and cardiac MRI.
