The Family Medicine Residency Program is the most recognized component of the dynamic Department of Family Medicine at Carolinas Medical Center (CMC). Department Programs include: sports medicine, geriatrics, behavioral medicine, clinical research, community initiatives, LGTBQ+ care, primary care infectious disease management,  integrative medicine and the teaching of medical students.

The residency program formally began in 1973, but its heritage goes back much further with its predecessor, a general practice training program.  Our program accepts 12 residents each year:

3 in the Biddle Point/ Urban Underserved Track

6 in the Elizabeth/ Traditional Track

3 in the Union/ Community Apprenticeship Track

We are one program with one curriculum; the tracks delineate the location of residency continuity clinics.

The Elizabeth Track is located at Elizabeth Family Medicine immediately adjacent to Atrium Health Mercy hospital. The Biddle Point Track is located at Atrium Health Biddle Point and the Union Track is at Union Family Practice in Monroe, NC, one block from Atrium Health Union Hospital

Our residents have learning opportunities in academic and community-based settings where family physicians, residents and faculty are well accepted in these highly collaborative environments. Carolinas Medical Center (CMC) is a large, tertiary-care medical center with residents in many other specialties where residents complete off-service rotations and the maternal/child portion of the Family Medicine inpatient service. Our Family Medicine inpatient services are located at 2 community hospitals: Atrium Health Union (Union Track) and the adult portion at Atrium Health Mercy (Elizabeth and Biddle Point Tracks).

The residency program is fully approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).  The program offers an array of special opportunities for unique individuals who aspire to become the most competent and well-prepared family physicians for today's ever-changing healthcare environment.
