Carolinas HealthCare System Neurosciences Institute offers the full range of epilepsy diagnosis and treatment options for adults and children. Our team works closely with you and your family to develop a treatment program designed to fit your needs and help you take control of your epilepsy.

Two of our hospitals – Carolinas Medical Center (CMC) and Carolinas HealthCare System NorthEast – have achieved the highest levels of accreditation from the National Association of Epilepsy Centers. CMC is a Level 4 treatment center, and NorthEast is a Level 3 center for both adult and pediatric epilepsy. With specialists in Charlotte and Concord, the epilepsy center makes care available to patients and their families across a wide geographic area.

We also have achieved national distinction from several highly respected epilepsy accreditation organizations, including:

  • The Joint Commission Disease-Specific Care Certification in Inpatient Epilepsy
  • National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC)
  • American Board of Registered Evoked Potential and Electroencephalographic Technologists (ABRET) EEG Lab Accreditation

Epilepsy Treatment

Our treatment options range from traditional and surgical procedures to alternative treatments and include:

  • Focal cortical excision: removal of a defined area of the brain that is found to produce seizures
  • Lobectomy: removal of a single brain lobe
  • Multilobar resection: removal of more than one area of the brain
  • Multiple subpial transection: cutting nerve fibers in the outer layers of the brain
  • Corpus callostomy: cutting a band of tissue that sends messages across the brain
  • Hemispherectomy: removing or disabling a brain hemisphere
  • Ketogenic diet clinic with dedicated dietitian providing individualized treatment plans
  • Vagal nerve stimulator: pacemaker-like device implanted into the chest wall to detect and stop seizure activity
  • Responsive neurostimulator system: implantation of a neurostimulator device in the brain to detect and prevent seizures in patients who may not be candidates for other surgical procedures
