Cancer Support

There is one common thread in all people with cancer: the need for a good support system. From how you tell loved ones that you have cancer to your ability to handle treatments, our team of social workers and counselors are here to provide you with support.

Cancer support programs include:

  • Individual and group counseling with trained oncology social workers and counselors
  • Disease-specific support groups for patients and caregivers led by experienced facilitators (call 980-442-1006 for the list of currently active groups)
  • Virtual connectivity through web-based activities
  • Financial counseling
  • Assistance from patient resource navigators
  • Pastoral care
  • Psychiatric assessment/referral

Healing Arts Program

Exploring your creative expression by engaging in artistic activities, such as music and art, can have a powerful impact on the healing process and has been shown to promote wellness during medical treatment.

Healing arts programs include:

  • Art and soul classes  Through drawing and mixed-media, you will create art to relax, inspire and strengthen your artistic spirit
  • Artist in residence program  Experienced artists work with patients and family members during treatment to explore creativity and create meaningful art pieces
  • LCI writing community  Open to cancer survivors and their friends and family, our writing community provides an opportunity to honor life experiences through the written word.

Nutritional Cancer Support

Our registered dietitians will help you develop a plan to nourish your body throughout your cancer treatment – including the times when it’s difficult to find foods you can consume – and during recovery.

Nutritional support includes:

  • Healthy cooking club  Using the latest nutritional research and new seasonal recipes, we provide a cooking demo every month and share samples and recipes
  • Weight management workshop  Learn quick and easy ways to make healthy food choices in this fun, hands-on class
  • Eating well after cancer treatment  Learn how to apply the latest research to choose the best foods, understand food labels and prepare foods in a healthy way
  • Eating well during cancer treatment  We’ll discuss how treatment can affect your nutrition and how to keep you strong, enhance the effectiveness of treatment and ensure your treatment is uninterrupted
  • Eating well after breast cancer treatment  This class covers common nutrition concerns that come up after breast cancer treatment

Integrative Oncology Treatment

Integrative oncology is a holistic way to promote wellness while reducing cancer's impact and maximizing quality of life.

Physicians specially trained in integrative oncology along with support staff work with the primary oncology team to address the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of patients and their family members throughout treatment and survivorship.

Every service we offer is backed by research on safety and effectiveness for cancer patients and survivors.

  • Healing touch – The practitioner places hands on or above your body, focusing on adjusting your energy field to support your natural ability to heal
  • Yoga – Incorporating postures, rhythmic breathing and meditation, the practice of yoga enhances your physical and mental well-being 
  • Massage therapy – Besides its soothing nature, massage therapy is also used to reduce symptoms (such as pain and stiffness), reduce stress and improve your ability to cope
  • Tai Chi – Using slow, controlled movements, Tai Chi helps to reduce stress and enhance inner peace while lessening cancer-related symptoms
  • Deep relaxation and mindfulness classes – Through breath work and visualization, these classes will give you tools to find inner balance and peace

Cancer Rehabilitation

In partnership with Levine Cancer Institute, Carolinas Rehabilitation is one of the few hospitals in the nation to offer both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services for cancer patients.

Project PINK

Project PINK provides mobile access to breast care, which entails a state-of-art breast center on a bus. Our mobile breast center allows us to offer these screenings wherever they are needed in a convenient, compassionate environment and at no cost to participants.

Donations to Carolinas Breast Cancer Fund contribute to our free mammography days. To learn more about the Carolinas Breast Cancer Fund, please call 704-355-1396.

Project PINK offers the following breast care:

  • Screening mammogram (on event day)
  • One diagnostic follow-up exam (if recommended)
  • Biopsy* (if needed)

*Prior to biopsy, patients should contact the Mecklenburg County Health Department (704-336-6495) to seek eligibility for their Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program.

Project PINK eligibility guidelines:

  • Women must be 40 years or older
  • Must not have insurance covering a mammogram annually
  • Must not have Medicare or Medicaid
  • Must live in Mecklenburg County, NC
  • Must have a primary care provider
  • Must be one year since previous mammogram
  • Must not be pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Must have no new breast lumps/concerns (patient should promptly contact their primary care physician if experiencing breast problems) or have pre-existing conditions

Cancer Wellness Program

This 12-week exercise and lifestyle program is designed to assist you in managing the physical side effects of cancer treatment and aid in recovery once treatment is completed.

Working with an expert team of registered nurses, dietitians and exercise specialists, you’ll receive the tools you need to embrace a healthier lifestyle and hopefully reduce the likelihood of cancer recurrence. 

Program highlights:

  • Weekly nutrition
  • Education
  • Exercise, including restorative yoga
  • Goal-setting
  • Accountability
  • 12-week facility access to the YMCA (of Greater Charlotte or Cannon Memorial YMCA locations)

The program fee is based on a sliding scale with the maximum cost of $75 for YMCA members and $100 for non-members. Financial assistance is available.

Coping with a cancer diagnosis and navigating the complex system of cancer care – with its many physicians and treatment options – is overwhelming, to say the least.

Our nurse navigators are here to help, by assisting patients, families and caregivers understand the many resources and options that come with cancer care.

The American Cancer Society is a nationwide, community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem.

Cancer Financial Assistance Coalition is a group of financial assistance organizations that provide information and connection to financial resources for cancer patients.

The Cancer Legal Resource Center provides information regarding legal issues facing patients and families, including employment, health insurance, estate planning, advance directives and government benefits.

CancerCare is a national organization serving all cancer patients and their families by providing free, professional support services, such as financial assistance and telephone support groups.

Needymeds provides information and links to prescription assistance programs, disease-based assistance programs and coupons for commonly used over the counter and prescription medicines.

REhope Fertility Treatment

REhope helps you understand how your cancer diagnosis and treatment plan (such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiation) may impact your fertility. And our reproductive endocrinologists work hand in hand with your cancer care team to incorporate a fertility preservation plan into your treatment regimen to preserve future fertility options.
