Welcome to the Sandra and Leon Levine Psychiatry Residency Program at the Carolinas HealthCare System!
It is an exciting time for us at CHS as we have extended our physician residency programs to include psychiatry, with our inaugural class to begin July, 2017. We are pleased with your interest in our program, and we look forward to preparing residents for a dynamic career. In the past decade, we have seen innovative developments emerge on a regular basis. Future psychiatrists will need to incorporate novel technology and treatment modalities with the empathy and compassion of patient care. We are thrilled that psychiatry residents will now have the opportunity to train at the largest healthcare system in the Carolinas.
The wide range of services and opportunities at CHS will afford you an exciting and enriching residency experience. We emphasize a collaborative approach to care and utilize systems-based and trauma-informed models. Residents will learn various forms of individual and group psychotherapy, as well as neurotherapies, including ECT and TMS. The wealth of resources and breadth of faculty expertise offer a comprehensive educational and clinical experience. You will be prepared to pursue any number of opportunities in the future as clinicians, educators, or researchers.
CHS provides a welcoming, supportive environment as you enter into residency training. During your first two years, you’ll gain experience in a variety of clinical settings including:
The third year is a transition to outpatient psychiatry, allowing residents to provide continuity to patients and families. You will work with adults as well as children/adolescents and families and treat a wide range of psychiatric disorders.
The final year is dedicated mostly to elective time, allowing residents to explore other areas of interest. This is a unique opportunity to develop specialized skills and ensure successful transition to the next step in your career.
Education is at the forefront of our department and CHS as a system. With the development of our program, we focus on the balance of clinical experience and scholarly activity. Your time is protected for formal didactics, which include case presentations, discussion of journal articles, interactive seminars, and attending grand rounds with some of the most renowned experts in our field.
