Biography

“My philosophy is that no child should have to leave their support system. This drives me to offer everything available in the country to our patients.”

Dr. Oesterheld is board certified in pediatric hematology-oncology (cancer and blood disorders) and is a leader in pursuing better treatments to beat childhood cancer. He specializes in treating neuroblastomas and sarcomas, with treatments like radiation therapies and experimental therapeutics. He is fluent in Spanish.

He is the endowed chair for the Jeff Gordon Children's Foundation and the specialty medical director at Atrium Health Levine Children's Cancer & Blood Disorders, a facility of Carolinas Medical Center. Dr. Oesterheld has been named a Top Doctor by Charlotte Magazine for many years.

He’s also the principal investigator for Carolinas Kids Cancer Research Coalition, in conjunction with the developmental therapeutics program at Levine Children’s Hospital. Additionally, he is the institutional principal investigator for the Beat Childhood Cancer consortium, National Pediatric Cancer Foundation’s Sunshine Project, and Carolinas Kids Cancer Research Coalition.

Dr. Oesterheld received his medical degree at the Universidad Central del Caribe and completed his residency at Rutgers University (formerly the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey). He followed that with a fellowship at Columbia University (formerly the New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center).

Additionally, he is the study chair or site principal investigator for multiple clinical research studies into acute leukemia, high-grade non-Hodgkin leukemia, acute myelogenous leukemia and refractory pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia. His research has been published in top journals and has led to lecture invitations across the country.

He loves to spend time with his wife and 2 sons. He enjoys live music, golf and traveling.
