What do the specialists at the Sports Medicine and Injury Care do?

Our providers specialize in the non-surgical treatment of musculoskeletal conditions and injuries, sports medicine conditions and back and neck injuries and problems.  Our goal is to treat the injury or problem then guide patients through the appropriate rehabilitation minimizing disability, maximizing function and decreasing time away from sports, work or school.  Our treatments include traditional as well as newer up-to-date interventions.

What special training does a Sports Medicine and Injury Care specialist have?

The specialists of the Sports Medicine and Injury Care at Carolinas Healthcare System are trained in family medicine, internal medicine or physical medicine/rehabilitation.  There is an additional year of training in sports medicine or interventional pain medicine through an accredited fellowship program.  All of our specialists are board-certified in their area of specialty.  Our physicians have significant experience working directly with athletes and share this expertise with patients of all activity levels.

Do sports medicine specialists only treat competitive athletes?

No. Our Sports Medicine and Injury Care specialists are ideal physicians for athletes and non-athletes of all ages, and are excellent resources for the individual who wishes to become active or begin an exercise program. For the “weekend warrior” or “industrial athlete” who experiences an injury, the same expertise used for the competitive athlete can be applied to return the patient to full function as quickly as possible.

What if the Sports Medicine and Injury Care is closed when I need care?

If you experience an injury during evening or weekend hours, access one of our many convenient urgent care centers, including children’s urgent care offices. If specialized care is needed, our staff will schedule your appointment with us for the very next work day.

What other services can the Sports Medicine and Injury Care coordinate?

Our physicians coordinate any necessary imaging, testing, therapy and, if necessary, a referral to an orthopedic surgeon. As the largest integrated system in the region, all services can be set up within the Carolinas HealthCare System network.
