Liver cancer tests and diagnosis
If liver cancer is suspected, your doctor may recommend several tests to diagnose or rule out the disease.
- Physical exam – to check for lumps or other changes, as well as fluid buildup in the stomach
- Blood tests – to check if the liver is working properly
- Imaging tests – to get a more detailed look at the stomach and liver
- Biopsy – a sample of liver tissue that’s analyzed in a lab for cancer cells
Liver cancer treatment
There are several approaches to treating liver cancer. Our team of experts has the skill and experience to determine the best treatments for the best outcomes.
Our team includes experts from many fields, including gastroenterology, hepatology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, interventional radiology, pathology and surgery, ensuring that every aspect of care is covered.
- Extended liver resections – surgery to remove the diseased portion of the liver
- Minimally invasive surgery – a procedure performed through tiny incisions (or surgical cuts), including robotic surgery
- Radiofrequency and microwave ablation – kills tumor cells with heat and spares surrounding healthy tissue
- Transarterial chemotherapy – delivers cancer drugs directly to the tumor site
- Radioembolization – delivers cancer drugs directly to the tumor site
- Chemotherapy – shrinks or kills cancer with powerful medications that may be given in pill form or through an IV tube
- Radiation therapy – shrinks tumor before surgery and reduces the risk of recurrence after surgery
- Therapeutic endoscopy with endoscopic ultrasound
