At Carolinas HealthCare System, we support the growth of healthy communities. We offer a course called Mental Health First Aid (MHFA). This is an important tool to educate our community on how to reach out and help those around you who may be struggling with mental illness or substance abuse. MHFA teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance abuse.

MHFA training is available to individuals and groups across the community, including:

  • Employers
  • Faith communities
  • Public health and safety officials
  • Veterans’ organizations
  • Advocacy groups
  • Youth/adolescent groups and programs – there is a specific MHFA version for youth
  • Latino organizations (the program is available in Spanish, as well as English)

If you are planning a MHFA course, please make sure to have the following available:

  • 15 or more participants (30 or more participants will need two instructors)
  • Snacks or a meal for individuals taking the course
  • Audio/visual equipment
  • Spacious room with tables and chairs
  • Adequate parking

MHFA was developed by the National Council on Behavioral Health along with the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and Missouri Department of Mental Health.
