Steven J. Hannigan, MD

“Our work is critical to the patient experience. You will not find us on billboards or in advertisements, but we are the first physicians to your room in an emergency. I value the breadth of diagnosis and acuity required to diagnose and treat almost any condition from birth to age 21. I enjoy forging relationships with patients and families during their acute illnesses and at times of vulnerability. My goal is not to be remembered, but to provide excellent care, intervene as quickly as possible, prevent adverse events and get children back home in a better state of health.”

Dr. Hannigan is board certified in pediatrics and board eligible in pediatric hospital medicine. He specializes in pediatric hospital medicine.

He values each opportunity to optimize the care of children with complex conditions by working with teams of subspecialty physicians.

Dr. Hannigan is the assistant program director for recruitment for pediatric residency at Atrium Health Pediatrics. He serves on the Residency Program Evaluation Committee, the Clinical Competency Committee and the Pediatric Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee. He is a member of the Association of Pediatric Program Directors.

His interests include medical education and quality improvement. He is involved in the Choosing Wisely: Bronchiolitis Quality Improvement project and Neonatal Jaundice Quality Improvement project.

Dr. Hannigan completed a combined bachelor of arts and medical degree program at Siena College and Albany Medical College. He was elected by his peers to the Gold Humanism Honor Society. He completed residency at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center, where he was chief resident.

He and his wife, Anna, are embarking on the journey of new parenthood. Dr. Hannigan enjoys reading thrillers and nonfiction books about psychology and cognition. He avidly supports his hometown teams from Upstate New York, along with the Charlotte-based Panthers, Hornets, Knights, Checkers and the Charlotte FC soccer team.
