Kathy Shields, MSN, CNM

Shields is a board-certified nurse midwife who specializes in obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN). She’s had the privilege to care for women for more than 25 years. She established the first nurse midwife practice at Charlotte OB/GYN in 1995, and now the practice has grown to a strong, committed group of 7 nurse midwives.

Shields understands how women’s health care can be challenging and complex. Because she’s experienced OB/GYN complications and infertility, she’s committed to helping women understand their options, make informed choices and create a plan of care.

She enjoys working with a wide range of patients, from adolescents to seniors, and has a special interest in helping couples with infertility issues. Shields also worked as a labor and delivery nurse for many years. Birth and women’s health care inspired her to focus and enhance her career by pursuing an educational degree as a nurse midwife.

She earned her nursing degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her master’s degree in nursing from East Carolina University.

Away from work, Shields and her husband enjoy traveling, sailing and snowmobiling. She also enjoys flower gardening, playing with her dog, interior decorating and singing in her church choir.
