Biography

Dr. Messick is board certified in family medicine and sports medicine. He is an associate professor of family medicine and orthopedic surgery at Atrium Health. He also serves as the assistant director of the Cabarrus Family Medicine Sports Medicine Fellowship program.

Dr. Messick is heavily involved in the sports medicine community, serving as chief medical officer for the Charlotte Football Club. He has served as team physician for several organizations and events at various levels of athletic play, including the Carolina Speed professional indoor football team, Catawba College, the Marine Corps Marathon, a USA Volleyball tournament and many other high school teams and tournaments. He has served as a board representative for the American College of Sports Medicine Southeast Chapter. He is the subcommittee chair for research for the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine and a member of the Health and Science Policy Committee for the American College of Sports Medicine.

Dr. Messick has received the Emily M. Haymes Mentoring Award from the American College of Sports Medicine Southeast Chapter and was recognized as a Top Doctor by Charlotte magazine.

He received his medical degree at American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine. He completed residency and a sports medicine fellowship at Atrium Health Cabarrus Family Medicine. Dr. Messick also completed a faculty development fellowship in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of North Carolina.

Dr. Messick has published several articles on the diagnosis and treatment of sports-related injuries and conditions, including “little leaguer’s elbow,” “gymnast’s wrist,” clavicle fractures and spondyloarthropathies (forms of arthritis that occur in the bones in the spine and nearby joints).

When he’s not working, he enjoys weightlifting, running, fishing and scuba diving.
