Biography

Nationally recognized for his leadership in neurosurgical clinical care, research, education, policy and advocacy, Dr. Asher serves as president of Atrium Health Neurosciences Institute, as well as the surgical director of the Neuro-Oncology Program at Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute. He is also the founder of the Neurosurgery Residency Program at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center, where he currently serves as the vice director. In addition, Dr. Asher is a clinical professor in neurosurgery at Atrium Health, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Vanderbilt University, as well as a professor of orthopaedic surgery at Atrium Health.

Dr. Asher has held numerous senior leadership positions in organized neurosurgery and organized medicine, including president of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, vice chairman of the American Board of Neurological Surgery and chairman of the Brain Committee of the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group. He is the current treasurer of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.

With over 250,000 patients enrolled to date in four major platforms, Dr. Asher has spearheaded the development and implementation of national quality data programs in neurosurgery and spine care. He co-founded the National Neurosurgery Quality and Outcomes Database and is the co-chairman and co-founder of the American Spine Registry, the nation’s largest spine registry and a combined effort between the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He has represented neurosurgery and other medical specialties in leadership and advisory roles for a variety of quality care and safety stakeholders including the Joint Commission, the FDA, the AMA National Quality Registry Council, the National Quality Forum and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.

Since 2003, Dr. Asher has been recognized annually as one of the Best Doctors in America. He is a long-standing member of Carolina Neurosurgery & Spine Associates, located in Charlotte, NC. His primary clinical interests include neuro-oncology, skull-base surgery, stereotactic surgery, trigeminal neuralgia and minimally invasive spine surgery. He has also been recognized as one of the nation’s Top Doctors for Cancer Care and has extensive experience developing and conducting phase 1-4 cooperative clinical cancer research programs. Most recently, he and his colleagues have developed novel treatment paradigms for patients with metastatic brain cancer, which have now become standard of care in a majority of North American treatment environments.

Dr. Asher is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and has been elected to the American Academy of Neurological Surgery and Society of Neurological Surgeons.
