What are kidney stones?

Kidney stones are small, hard pieces of calcium or other minerals that can form in one or both kidneys, the bladder or the urinary tubes. Kidney stones rarely cause permanent damage but often require more than one treatment.

A small stone may pass through the urinary tract with little or no pain. Or your child may feel a sharp pain in their back, side, lower abdomen or groin. Blood in the urine can also be a sign of kidney stones. If kidney stones come back, it can signify a chronic condition – recurrence can be common in pediatric stone disease.

Kidney stone treatments

We treat all types of urinary stone diseases. This includes typical calcium stones, or kidney stones, which are the most common. But we also treat unusual renal stone disorders, stones caused by medications or special diets, and stones associated with chronic conditions, such as seizure disorders.

While some kidney stones can be managed with medication, others might require surgery. During surgery, our expert urologic surgeon will break the stone into smaller pieces to help it pass more easily. To prevent future kidney stones, we’ll work with your family to determine the best ongoing care plan, which might include medication or dietary changes.
