What We Treat

At the pediatric stone center, we treat all types of kidney and urinary tract stone diseases. This includes typical calcium stones, or kidney stones, which are the most common. But we also treat unusual renal stone disorders, stones caused by medications or special diets, and stones associated with chronic conditions, such as seizure disorders.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Kidney Stones

Through evaluation of your child’s medical history, a physical exam and testing, our team will work to diagnose the nature of your child’s kidney stones and help determine the cause. While some kidney stones can be managed with medication, others might require surgery. During surgery, our expert urologic surgeon will break the stone into smaller pieces to help it pass more easily. To prevent future kidney stones, we’ll work with you and your child to determine the best ongoing care plan, which might include medication or dietary changes.

What Are Kidney Stones?

Kidney stones are small, hard pieces of calcium or other minerals that can form in one or both kidneys, the bladder or the urinary tubes. Kidney stones rarely cause permanent damage but often require more than one treatment.

A small stone may pass through the urinary tract with little or no pain. Or your child may feel a sharp pain in the back, side, lower abdomen or groin. Also, be sure to look for blood in the urine. In many cases, pediatric stone disease can signify a chronic condition that is linked to recurring stone episodes.
