What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

Obstructive sleep apnea is a significant sleep disorder in which breathing stops and restarts during sleep, reducing sleep quality. Common symptoms of this disorder include loud snoring and daytime sleepiness. Obstructive sleep apnea is caused by intermittent relaxation of throat muscles, blocking your airway during sleep.

Anyone can develop obstructive sleep apnea. OSA is most common in middle-aged or older adults and people who are overweight. Even younger and thin people can have this disorder.

What is a sleep study?

There are two primary types of sleep studies: In-laboratory sleep studies and home sleep studies.

In-laboratory studies

  • In-laboratory studies means spending a full night in a sleep laboratory from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., in what looks like a hotel room. Electrodes are put on your skin, head, face and body by a technologist who monitors your sleep and breathing during the night.
  • In-laboratory studies are done to help for diagnose and treat different sleep disorders.

Home sleep studies

  • A home sleep study is another type of a sleep study.
  • Home sleep studies are used to diagnose or rule out obstructive sleep apnea.
  • Home sleep studies are not the best test for all patients. Not all insurance carriers will cover the cost of this study.
  • Your sleep medicine doctor can help you decide which sleep study is best for you.
