Kidney cancer begins in the kidneys, which are small organs located in the abdomen. The kidneys process about 200 quarts of blood per day to rid the body of waste and extra water. They keep the blood clean and chemically balanced.

It is estimated that 36,000 Americans will be diagnosed with kidney cancer this year.

Kidney Cancer Types

Common types of kidney cancer include:

  • Renal cell carcinoma (common among adults)
  • Wilms' tumor (common among children)

Kidney Cancer Symptoms

Signs and symptoms of kidney cancer include:

  • Bloody urine
  • Pain in the lower back
  • Fever
  • Weight loss
