Acute TBAD
If you’re like many physicians today, you might think patients with Type B aortic dissection (TBAD) can only be treated with medical management or open chest surgery. New research is showing that these patients might have another option.
Enter TEVAR. Short for thoracic endovascular aortic repair, this percutaneous procedure involves placing a stent graft into the aorta to restore blood flow to the true lumen. It’s a minimally invasive, endovascular alternative to open surgery.
Medical management for acute uncomplicated TBAD is still indicated. But recent clinical trials like the INSTEAD and ADSORB trials are showing that pairing medical management with TEVAR is leading to improved survival and better patient outcomes compared to medical management alone.
