Dr. Scott Furney, Chairman, Department of Internal Medicine

Dr. Scott Furney is the Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine. He completed his undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Michigan in the prestigious Inteflex Program, graduating with Honors. During medical school, he earned the honor of being inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha. Dr. Furney then completed his internship and residency at the University of Michigan as well, earning "Resident of the Year" honors in his final year. He was also chosen to be chief resident at the University of Michigan after completing his training.

He stayed on faculty in Ann Arbor, becoming medical director of the General Medicine inpatient services. In 1997, he completed training at the Stanford Faculty Development Program in Clinical Teaching and has been a strong proponent of the "resident as educator" since that time. He joined the faculty at Carolinas Medical Center in 2002, and was named the Vice-Chair of the Department in 2005 before being named Chair in 2008. He is also a Clinical Professor of Medicine at UNC-Chapel Hill, and a member of UNC-Chapel Hill's prestigious Academy of Educators. He has recently been named a Master Fellow in the Center for Faculty Excellence in Atrium Health.

Dr. Furney is deeply committed to education at all levels and is known by the residents as a strong proponent of evidence-based medicine and bedside physical exam skills. He has received numerous teaching awards throughout his career and maintains a constant presence in all aspects of our teaching program.

Dr. Kristi Moore, Program Director, Internal Medicine Residency Program

Dr. Kristi Moore holds the position of Residency Program Director. She has a background in sports medicine after graduating from the Honors Program at East Tennessee State University with a double major in athletic training and biology. She went on to receive her medical degree Magna cum Laude from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia, where she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Dr. Moore completed her internal medicine internship and residency at the University of Maryland and VA Medical Centers in Baltimore, Maryland, after which she was selected to serve as Chief Resident at Mercy Medical Center, a University of Maryland-affiliated hospital in Baltimore. She spent her year as Chief Resident heavily involved in education and advocacy for the residency program. Afterwards, she remained in Baltimore for several years as an attending academic hospitalist before travelling south to Charlotte, NC in 2012 to join the faculty at Carolinas Medical Center. She served as an Associate Program Director for over eight years prior to transitioning into the Program Director role. Dr. Moore is also Clinical Assistant Professor at the Wake Forest School of Medicine.

Dr. Moore’s clinical interests include resident and medical student education, consultative medicine, mentoring, and transitions of care. When not in the hospital, she enjoys photography, hiking, and, most of all, spending time with her husband and three young children.

Dr. Steve Cochran, Associate Program Director, Internal Medicine Residency Program

Dr. Steve Cochran holds the position of Associate Residency Program Director. He grew up in California before attending the University of Notre Dame, graduating with honors in 1993. Dr. Cochran received his medical degree from Indiana University in 1997 before proceeding south to the Carolinas. After completing his Internal Medicine residency at Wake Forest University, he remained to complete fellowship training in Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Cochran joined the faculty at Carolinas Medical Center in 2003 and has continued to serve in both the intensive care and inpatient general medicine environments since that time.

Dr. Cochran has strong clinical interests in critical care and resident education. He is actively involved in teaching ICU procedures, use of ventilators and hemodynamic support. The residents have valued his role in their education enough to honor him with the ‘Outstanding Faculty Award for House Staff Teaching’ in 2011. Outside of the hospital, Dr. Cochran’s hobbies include any and all sports, family life with his wife and three young children and a sometimes pathologic obsession with Notre Dame athletics.

Dr. Suneet Kaur, Associate Program Director, Internal Medicine Residency Program

Dr. Suneet Kaur holds the position of Associate Program Director. She grew up in Buffalo, New York and attended a six year combined medical program through Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Albany Medical College. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital through the University of Rochester and briefly joined the faculty of the Primary Care program in Rochester, NY. She then went on to complete a fellowship at Duke University/Durham VA in Women’s Health that included a Masters in Health Services Research. During that time she published several abstracts and papers regarding passive smoke risk to women as well as chronic pain in women. Dr. Kaur worked as a hospitalist at Durham Regional Hospital prior to accepting a position at Carolinas Medical Center in 2008 as Clinical Assistant Professor, UNC school of Medicine. Currently, she has an active faculty practice through the Myers Park Clinic.

Dr. Kaur has been involved in resident and medical student education since medical school, and recently has been coordinating the ambulatory clinic curriculum for the residency program since 2009. Besides her commitment to education and curriculum development, Dr. Kaur is committed to serving her community as a teacher and role model. Other hobbies include, traveling, hiking, classical Indian music and most of all, spending time with her husband, 3 children and extended family.

Ashley Clark, Residency Program Coordinator II, Internal Medicine Residency Program

Ashley Clark is the lead Residency Coordinator for the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Carolinas Medical Center. Ashley grew up in the Charlotte region and is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She has worked in Graduate Medical Education since 2016 and thoroughly enjoys her work with the CMC Internal Medicine Residency Program.

Ashley says that, "Engaging with the residents is what I enjoy the most about my job. The CMC Internal Medicine Residents are caring, committed, energetic and overall fun to work with."

In her spare time, Ashley enjoys adventures of almost any kind, but especially traveling, reading and singing in her church choir.

Khyandra Murrain, Residency Program Coordinator I, Internal Medicine Residency Program

Khyandra Murrain is the Residency Coordinator I for the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Carolinas Medical Center. Khyandra was raised in the Charlotte area and is a graduate of Elon University. She has a background in higher education, previously working for The College Advising Corps and Central Piedmont Community College. Khyandra joined the Internal Medicine Residency Program in August 2023.

While she’s not busy co-hosting the Your Advisors Will See You Now Podcast, Khyandra enjoys cooking, discovering new restaurants and tennis.
