Salary and Benefits for Internal Medicine ResidentsDuring the 2021-2022 academic year, salaries for House Staff in the Graduate Medical Education Programs at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center are as follows:

  • PGY-1 $60,400
  • PGY-2 $63,100
  • PGY-3 $65,700

Benefits

Atrium Health offers two health plan options for House Staff and their family members.

Atrium Health pays all premiums for residents and fellows, (as well as their eligible dependents and spouses when applicable,) for the Health Savings (HSA) plan.*

 

Residents also have the option of choosing the newly added Co-pay/ (Flexible Spending) FSA plan instead. In that case, residents will pay significantly subsidized biweekly premiums (the difference in cost between the HSA plan and the FSA plan)* through payroll deduction.

Atrium Health provides the following insurances for House Staff only

  • Professional liability
  • Life
  • Disability 

Vision plan and other voluntary benefits are available with premiums being payroll deducted. Vision plan is First Day Coverage, administered by Community Eye Care with no copay for eye exams and annual allowance for eyewear up to $200. 

Dental Insurance

  • No Premiums for Dental Coverage for house staff and family members - First Day Coverage
  • Preventive care is covered at 100% and does not apply to coverage maximums
  • Annual Preventive Dental Care rewards you additional $100 each year added to annual max up to $2,000

Professional Liability Insurance

  • Full coverage while functioning in the role of a house officer. External moonlighting activity is not covered.

Short Term and Long Term Disability Insurance 

Eligibility: standard hours of 30 hours (or more) weekly – automatically enrolled with First Day Coverage

Short-Term: Coverage begins on the first day of orientation; pays 60% of base salary on the 15th day of disability. Maternity Leave follows Atrium Maternity Leave Policy. 
Long-Term: Coverage begins on the first day of orientation; pays 60% of base salary after 180 days of disability. 
 
**All pre-existing exclusions apply to Long Term Disability plans.**

Vacation

Categorical
PGY-1 year
 

15 weekdays (i.e. 3 weeks) of vacation

Typically, 5 of these days are used at either Christmas or New Year's.

Preliminary
PGY-1 year

15 weekdays (i.e. 3 weeks) of vacation

Typically, 5 of these days are used at either Christmas or New Year's.

Prelim interns are also allowed moving time ~June 24- June 30.

PGY-2 year

15 weekdays (i.e. 3 weeks) of vacation

Typically, 5 of these days are used at either Christmas or New Year's.

In addition, residents are allowed one week of CME time for an educational trip in the Continental US, for which tuition and expenses up to $1900 are provided.

PGY-3 year

20 weekdays (i.e. 4 weeks) of vacation

Typically, 5 of these days are used at either Christmas or New Year's.

PGY-3 residents are also allowed moving time from ~June 24-June 30.

Residents are also allowed one week of CME time for an educational trip in the Continental US, for which tuition and expenses up to $1900 are provided.

 

401(k) Matched Savings Plan

Eligibility: Team members with 16 standard hours (or more) weekly.

Basic contribution: Each year, Atrium Health contributes 2% of your pay to your account, regardless of whether you save through the plan.

Matching contribution: When you save through the plan, Atrium Health matches: 75% of the first 4% of pay that you save and 50% of the next 2% of pay that you save, making the total maximum match 4% of your pay. To receive the full 4% match, you must save 6% of your pay through the plan.

Performance Based contribution: This contribution is based on System performance, similar to the Performance Plus program. When we meet certain targets, your account can receive an additional contribution, based on your service.

Continuing Education [CE]

$1900 in scholarly activities funds are provided each academic year which may be used for:

  • Educational trips in the Continental US
  • Medical/dental professional dues/memberships
  • Medical/dental texts/periodicals/journal subscriptions/software applications
  • Registration for USMLE exams and Board Certification exams – $500 limit
  • Approved Medical/dental equipment – $500 limit
  • Lab coats and scrubs beyond the standard allotment
  • Purchase of an iPad or other electronic device that is compatible with Atrium Health technologies (EMR) – $500 limit – see below
    • This is a one time purchase for the length of training
    • The funds for this device are taxable under federal guidelines
    • Using this device, resident may seamlessly connect to the hospital network and electronic medical record which makes patient rounding even more efficient

Family Leave

  • Up to six weeks for qualifying circumstances

Uniforms

  • Three lab coats and laundry service provided

Meals

  • Meal points are provided quarterly for use in the hospital cafeterias and Starbucks Coffee®

Moonlighting

  • PGY-2 and PGY-3 residents are allowed to moonlight assuming program director approval of the activity
  • There is a popular voluntary moonlighting opportunity available

Parking

  • Free covered and reserved parking for residents
