Anthony J. Caprio, MD, CMD, AGSF

Anthony J. Caprio, MD, is a graduate of the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine residency and fellowship in Geriatric Medicine at the University of Rochester, Rochester, NY. In 2005, he joined the faculty at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill where he served as the Medical Director for a continuing care retirement community and for a specialized geriatric medicine unit at UNC Hospital. Dr. Caprio is a former recipient of the Geriatric Academic Career Award from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Bureau of Health Professions. He is a graduate of the Teaching Scholars Program and the National Institutes of Health K30 Clinical Research Curriculum at UNC- Chapel Hill.

In 2012, Dr. Caprio joined Atrium Health (formerly Carolinas Healthcare System) and now serves as the chief for the Division of Geriatric Medicine in the Department of Family Medicine. In addition to his role directing the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program, Dr. Caprio teaches medical students, Family Medicine and Internal Medicine residents, and other health care professionals. He completed the Clinical Teaching Certificate Program from the Center for Faculty Excellence at Carolinas Medical Center. Dr. Caprio is a past recipient of the “Teacher of the Year” award in the Department of Family Medicine.

Dr. Caprio cares for older adults in outpatient, inpatient and long-term care settings. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Geriatric Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Medicine, a certified medical director at a local continuing care retirement community, and a Clinical Associate Professor in the Wake Forest University School of Medicine.

Dr. Caprio has a history of leadership in state and national organizations. He is a graduate of the North Carolina Medical Society (NCMS) Leadership College, previous chair of the NCMS Ethical and Judicial Affairs Task Force, past member of the American Geriatrics Society Ethics Committee, former President of the Durham-Orange County Medical Society, and former Executive Committee Member for the North Carolina Partnership for Compassionate Care, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving communication and education about end-of-life care. He has also served on several task forces for the NCMS and the North Carolina Institute of Medicine related to opioid prescribing, substance abuse, and mental health for older adults.

 His interests include medical education, end-of-life decision making, palliative care, medical ethics, fall prevention, and prescribing practices for older adults.

Dupal Patel, MD, CMD

Dupal Patel, MD, CMD, was born and raised in New Jersey. She is a graduate of Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. She then moved to Northeast Ohio for residency where she trained in Family Medicine at Cleveland Clinic - Fairview Hospital Residency Program. She continued her training by completing a fellowship in Geriatrics at Summa Akron City Hospital before joining the Center for Senior Health, where she worked for three and a half years honing her skills in geriatrics in a variety of settings. She specialized in interdisciplinary communication, cognitive assessments and post-acute care.

After enduring eight winters in Ohio, she and her husband decided to move closer to family and to fulfill her dream of teaching. Dr. Patel joined Atrium Health as staff at Elizabeth Family Medicine and key clinical faculty member of the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship in 2018.

She is board certified in Family Medicine and Geriatrics. Dr. Patel provides compassionate care for older adults in outpatient, acute and post-acute settings as well as teaches medical students, residents and fellows.

In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family, especially her three young children, and rediscovering the world through their eyes.

Erin Huston, DO, CMD

Erin Huston, DO, CMD is originally from Delaware, Ohio. She completed her undergraduate degree at Indiana University in Bloomington. She is a graduate of Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed her residency at Advent Health East Orlando in Family Medicine. Dr. Huston furthered her training and completed a fellowship in Geriatric Medicine at Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Spartanburg, South Carolina. She maintains board certifications in her specialties of Family Medicine and Geriatric Medicine.

As an attending physician, Dr. Huston has been working as a Geriatrician with Atrium Health since 2017. She has served as a Medical Director within the Skilled Nursing Facilities and maintains certification as a Post-Acute Care Medical Director. In addition to her love for Geriatrics, Dr. Huston has a passion for teaching medicine. As the Medical Director for the Geriatric Advanced Practitioner Fellowship from 2017-2023, Dr. Huston has been able to share her knowledge and enthusiasm for her field in various medical settings. She is particularly interested in helping patients and families navigate the aging process through education regarding particular disease processes and establishing individualized goals of care.

Dr. Huston joined the Geriatric Medical Faculty in 2023 to continue her passion for teaching. In her spare time, Dr. Huston and her family enjoy spending time together on Lake Norman and traveling to explore all that North Carolina and the southeast region has to offer. Dr. Huston is also an avid sports fan.

 

Kristen Geye, RN, MSN, AGPCNP-BC

Kristen Geye, RN, MSN, AGPCNP-BC is originally from Cleveland, Ohio. She graduated from Miami University of Ohio with a Bachelors in Biochemistry. Kristen completed her Masters in Nursing in 2016 at Vanderbilt University. She then moved to Charlotte, NC where she completed a year-long fellowship program in Geriatrics at Atrium Health.

Throughout her fellowship, Kristen gained experience in long term care, skilled nursing care, assisted living care, geriatric emergency room and trauma consultations, memory clinic, palliative care and hospice. Since completing the geriatric fellowship, she has worked with the Advanced Illness Management team focusing on patients with advanced illness and palliative home care. Kristen is a member of the American Geriatrics Society, Metrolina Coalition for Nurse Practitioners and Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association.

She has a special interest in geriatrics, patients with dementia, palliative care and end-of-life decision making.

Catherine Yang graduated from East Carolina University and has a background in child development, early intervention, family and community services, and pathology. Catherine joined Atrium Health in February 2020 as the Program Coordinator for Geriatric Medicine and Sports Medicine Fellowships. Catherine oversees administrative functions and is responsible for the coordination of various activities, meetings, lectures, fellow recruitment and orientation, and clinical rotations.
