Purpose

PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.

Program Overview

This accredited PGY1 Program in the Ambulatory Care setting is located in the Concord, NC (Cabarrus) region with 3 positions.

Ambulatory Care services and residency education opportunities are offered at multiple clinical sites. These practices and/or physicians hold National Committee for Quality Assurance(NCQA) recognition for Patient-Centered Medical Home and Diabetes and offer advanced services to patients within the medical home. Ambulatory Care services within Atrium Health consist of multiple models, such as embedded pharmacists, a pharmacist-run anticoagulation clinic, a team transitions of care clinic, and population health care teams. These pharmacists are deployed across the whole Metro region, and services are expanding to more rural areas and hospitals. Many of the pharmacists within the ambulatory care pharmacy department are Clinical Pharmacist Practitioners (CPPs) working at the top of their licenses as allowed in the state of North Carolina. Collaborative practice agreements are utilized in the ambulatory care setting between pharmacists and referring providers. Pharmacists at Atrium Health successfully bill for their unique comprehensive medication management services.

Program Structure

This 12-month American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) accredited residency offers experience in a variety of inter-disciplinary practice settings. Required clinical learning experiences are completed in one-month blocks with the majority completed at outpatient clinics. Developing skills to provide safe medication use through patient-focused, evidence-based medication management is the foundation and focus of our training. A fundamental feature of the residency is commitment to regular and extensive interaction between the resident and preceptors.

Residents may select elective rotations based on their interests and specific career goals. Each resident will meet quarterly with the residency program director to discuss the resident’s individual goals and may tailor their schedule to meet such goals as well as maximize the resident’s opportunities for learning experiences. The resident’s training is intensive and rigorous, providing many opportunities for growth of clinical skills, knowledge base and job management skills.

In addition to developing clinical skills, residents gain experience in clinical research through a longitudinal residency project and will have the opportunity to submit the project results for publication. Involvement in P&T committee and completion of medication use evaluations and drug monographs allow for direct physician interaction and exposure to the medication use process on a system-wide level. A service commitment is also required. Upon completion of the program, trainees are awarded an ASHP accredited residency certificate.

Twelve days are available for vacation or sick time off. A travel allowance will be provided to attend the ASHP Midyear Meeting, Research in Education and Practice Symposium (REPs), and/or other selected meetings. Residents are provided with dedicated office space, a laptop computer, and free parking. In addition, residents receive remote access to the hospital network, comprehensive drug information resources, and various retailer discounts in the area as an Atrium Health employee. Additionally, the Department of Pharmacy has an active continuing education program, with opportunities offered on a routine basis.

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at Atrium Health provides residents with the skills and knowledge required to become competent pharmacy practitioners with advanced skills in the ambulatory care setting.
