Virtual Residency Interviews:

For the 2023-2024 recruitment season, all our residency interview days will be conducted VIRTUALLY. We will begin reviewing applications through the Electronic Residency Application Services (ERAS) on September 27, 2023. We accept applications only from participants in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) which is available through your Dean's Office. Our 2023-2024 interview season will run from mid-October through mid-December. There will be limited opportunities for optional in-person and/or virtual “second looks” in late-January and early-February after our program rank list is submitted.

ERAS Supplemental Application Program:

For the 2023-2024 ERAS® cycle, our program strongly encourages all applicants to complete the optional supplemental ERAS application, in addition to the standard MyERAS application.

The additional information collected on the optional supplemental application will help our program staff learn more about an applicant’s medical education journey, including more meaningful information about an applicant’s work, volunteer, and research experiences, and will help us better identify individuals who fit our program’s environment and mission.

We are following the AAIM and AAMC guidance on the signaling of home/away programs in the supplemental application. If you are strongly interested in our program, please send a signal, including those who have completed a rotation here.

Interview Season Calendar:

Our 2023-2024 residency interview season will run from mid-October through mid-December. Interviews will be offered on most Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and a few Mondays and Thursdays. Most interviews are morning sessions with a also few afternoon options available. Applicants will have an opportunity to meet virtually with several of our residents on the evening prior to their interview day. The interview day will begin with a member of our leadership team welcoming the group and providing a program overview presentation. Applicants will have an opportunity to interview with three faculty members and view one of our pre-recorded resident case conference sessions. Applicants will also receive information about our campus and living in Charlotte. The virtual interview day should conclude no later than 1 p.m. EST. (5 p.m. EST for afternoon sessions). There will be limited opportunities for optional in-person and/or virtual “second looks” in late-January and early-February after our program rank list is submitted.

Application Criteria:

Our program leadership team conducts a holistic review of all applicants based on a combination of academic grades and test scores, an applicant’s recommendation letters, personal statement, evidence of leadership and service, and scholarship. While we do not have a USMLE or COMLEX cut-off score, applicants are required (with rare exception) to pass their standardized examinations on the first attempt to receive an invitation to interview.

Currently, we do not have any international medical graduates in our resident complement. We will review applications from students from international medical schools who meet all the following four criteria: [no exceptions here]

  1. Must be currently enrolled in medical school or have graduated from medical school within the last two years.
  2. Must have passed both USMLE exams on the first attempt.
  3. Must be ECFMG certified at the time of application submission.
  4. Atrium Health/Carolinas Medical Center and the Department of Internal Medicine can sponsor only J1 visas, and all petition fees must be paid for by the applicant.

How are applicants ranked?

We conduct a holistic review of all applicants, and our rank order list in the NRMP is based on a combination of academic scores and grades, an applicant’s recommendation letters, personal statement, scholarship, evidence of leadership and service and interview.    

Do you require a letter from the Chair of Internal Medicine?

No, but if you have worked closely with your Chair in a clinical or research setting, it would be appropriate to include a letter from him/her.

Do all of my letters of recommendation need to be from internists?

No. We encourage you to ask for letters from faculty with whom you have worked closely and who will best be able to assess your clinical and/or research abilities. However, it is recommended that at least one of your letters come from an internist.

Is there a maximum number of letters of recommendation you will accept?

ERAS allows as many letters of recommendation as you feel are necessary. However, no more than four letters may be sent to any individual program.

Internal Medicine Resident Applying and Interviewing, and Application InformationHow will I be notified if I am offered an interview?

Applicants will be notified by email via ERAS when they have been offered an interview. The process of scheduling an interview is done through ERAS and will be detailed in the email that you receive. We recommend scheduling an interview as soon as possible as dates fill up quickly.

How are interview dates assigned?

Interviews are held from late October through early January. Dates are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. We will do our best to accommodate your schedule, but we cannot guarantee availability of the dates you request, as each day has a limited number of spots available.

What is the approximate schedule for the interview day?

The interview day begins at approximately 7:30 a.m. and typically concludes around 1 p.m. There is an optional dinner with residents on the evening prior to the interview day which we encourage applicants to attend if possible.

Is there a scheduled event the evening before my interview?

Yes. You will be invited to participate in an optional virtual Meet & Greet with several of our residents. This is a virtual gathering that allows for casual group conversation and offers opportunities to ask our residents questions about their experiences in our program and what it is like to live in Charlotte. You will receive details about this event via email prior to your scheduled interview date.

Do I need to do a "Second Look" Interview to be favorably considered?

Absolutely not. “Second Look” visits are not at all required. Our program is currently monitoring national and local infection trends and conditions regarding the COVID pandemic, and we will decide if we are able to offer optional “Second Look” visits to our applicants at a later time.

Do you currently have any residents who are International Medical Graduates, and do you accept applications from students at international medical schools?

We do not currently have any residents in the program that are International Medical Graduates. We will review applications from students from international medical schools who meet all the following four criteria: [no exceptions here]

Do you accept International Medical Graduates for observerships or rotations in your department?

No. [No exceptions here]

I am a student from an osteopathic (D.O.) medical school. Do I need to take the USMLE or is the COMLEX alone acceptable?

We accept applications from students who have taken only the COMLEX exams, but we do find it additionally helpful if you have taken at least one of the USMLE exams.
