Fellowship Overview

Exposure to sports medicine and experience with game coverage is vital to the education of the two primary care sports medicine fellows. Each fellow is responsible for providing team coverage for the athletes of a Charlotte-area high school, Division I university, Division II university and mass event coverage (e.g., the North Carolina high school state wrestling tournament, Charlotte marathon, and others as per fellow’s interest).

Each fellow will also gain exposure to a variety of other sporting events (including college lacrosse, volleyball, baseball and softball, professional football, and soccer). The fellow gains experience on the sidelines and through evaluating acute and chronic injuries while following multiple sports. All collegiate coverage will be under the supervision of faculty, all of whom have extensive experience in sports medicine.

Specific coverage:

• East Mecklenburg High School football: Each fellow assumes the primary role as team physician.
• West Mecklenburg High School football: Each fellow assumes the primary role as team physician.
• UNC Charlotte 49ers – Division I: Solo coverage of women's soccer, men’s soccer (College Cup contenders in 2011) and all other varsity sports (coverage with attending physicians for football and men’s basketball). This includes weekly training room experience.
• Johnson C. Smith University – Division II: Predominantly solo coverage of men's and women’s basketball, track (coverage of football with attending physicians). As the fellowship year progresses, the fellow accrues more responsibilities and is given more solo coverage responsibilities. Will include weekly training room experience.
• Pre-participation physical exams for all programs.

The fellow also works with other Sports Medicine specialists in orthopedics, physical therapy, exercise physiology, sports nutrition and radiology.

The fellow will become proficient at multiple procedures, including:

• Joint and soft tissue injections (with ultrasound guidance as needed).
• Casting and splinting.
• Diagnostic and interventional musculoskeletal ultrasound.
• Regenerative medicine.

The fellow will have opportunities to develop lecture, teaching and publication skills. At the conclusion of the fellowship, the fellow will be able to sit for the Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine. The fellowship is a fully accredited program affiliated with Atrium Health family medicine residency.
