Arriving on time is very important. Please allow plenty of time for heavy traffic or unexpected delays. Wear loose, comfortable clothing and flat shoes. Please do not wear makeup, contact lenses or jewelry. Bring any forms or records your doctor has given you concerning your surgery or postsurgical care. Children may bring a favorite toy or blanket.

When you arrive at One Day Surgery, check in at the registration desk where your information will be verified and your parking ticket will be validated. Then, you will check in with our receptionist who will complete your registration process.

If you are going home after surgery, a responsible adult, 18 years of age or older, must accompany you to drive you home.

Wait Time

Nurse calling patientThe time you and your family spend in One Day Surgery must allow for the preparation before surgery, the surgical procedure and the recovery time. For example, if your doctor tells you the surgery will take one hour, you should expect to be in the department at least four or five hours. While you are here, we will do everything we can to make your stay with us pleasant.

What to Expect at Home

  • Activity: You may feel tired if you received anesthesia or sedation. This is normal and should pass within a day. You should plan to rest at home for the rest of the day. Parents should plan to be with their child for the first 24 hours after their child's surgical procedure.
  • Diet: Do not try to eat immediately. Work your way slowly from sips of clear liquid to your regular diet in order to avoid feeling nauseated. Avoid alcohol for the first 24 hours.
  • Medications: During the first 24 hours post-op, take only medications prescribed by your doctor.
  • Nurse follow-up: A nurse will call you the day after your surgery to check on your recovery and answer any questions you may have.

Thank you for choosing Carolinas Medical Center One Day Surgery. Our goal is to provide you with safe and excellent care.
