Carolinas HealthCare System Wellness Center is more than a fitness center. It is home to Cardiac/Pulmonary Rehabilitation, a facility of Carolinas HealthCare System NorthEast, where dedicated staff helps individuals become healthier through education and behavioral change.

The Wellness Center uses a team of healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, exercise physiologists, dietitians and mental health professionals to partner with you to improve your quality of life through exercise, good nutrition and stress reduction.

Our emphasis is based on relationships, compassion, empathy and connection with our participants and members. Through chronic disease management and medical fitness, we seek to change people’s lives.

Our programs include:

  • Cardiac Rehabilitation Program
  • Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program
  • Wellness Center Gym Membership

Cardiac Rehabilitation Program

The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program helps individuals make a full recovery from heart problems and return to an active lifestyle. Individuals of all ages are accepted into the program by physician referral. Participants include those who have undergone angioplasty, stent or coronary bypass surgery, have been diagnosed with heart disease, or are recovering from a heart attack, heart valve replacement or repair. Our team includes exercise physiologists, cardiac nurses, physicians, registered dietitians and behavioral counselors.

The program consists of two phases.

Phase 1

Phase 1 is care in the hospital for the patient following a heart event. We provide information on the particular diagnosis and explain the risk factors for heart disease while hopefully reducing anxiety related to discharge from the hospital.

After discharge from Carolinas HealthCare System NorthEast, patients are strongly encouraged to participate in a free orientation class at the Wellness Center. Education topics are presented in a class lecture format and include information about heart disease, heart-healthy nutrition, stress management and safe exercise. Participants and their family/significant other can attend a free general nutrition class.

Phase II

Phase II is regularly scheduled exercise classes where the patient progresses to a level of increased cardiac fitness while being monitored. The patient’s customized exercise prescription is based on a heart rate range determined from an evaluation, a nutritional consultation with our registered dietitian and a stress management consultation with our counselor. Our professional team supervises all exercise. There is a fee for Phase II of the outpatient program; however, many insurance policies will cover a majority of the costs.

The phase II program is located in the Gateway Medical Office Building II off Copperfield Boulevard. The facility has easy access and includes a demonstration kitchen, classroom and exercise equipment for all types of fitness levels.

These group classes range in size depending on the time.
