Cancer Care Without Walls
Levine Cancer Institute research and administrative headquarters is located on the campus of Carolinas HealthCare System's (CHS) Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. By integrating and building upon CHS's network of elite cancer programs and centers, the Institute is able to provide its more than 11,000 new cancer patients annually, greater access to specialists, treatment, clinical trials and support services closer to where they live throughout the Carolinas.
Recruitment of National Cancer Care Experts
The Institute has recruited nationally renowned experts in cancer care to lead the clinical teams and drive innovation and excellence in the care delivered to patients.
From the University of Texas MD Anderson Comprehensive Cancer Center, Edward S. Kim, MD, serves as chair of the Department of Solid Tumor Oncology. Dr. Kim is recognized as a national leader in molecular prognostication for lung cancer and specializes in thoracic oncology and head and neck cancers.
Edward A. Copelan, MD, FACP, from Cleveland Clinic’s Taussig Cancer Institute, serves as chair of the Department of Hematologic Oncology and Blood Disorders. His clinical specialties include bone marrow transplantation, leukemia, multiple myeloma and myelodysplastic syndromes.
Belinda Avalos, MD, formerly of Ohio State University Hospital, joins the Institute’s cancer team as vice chair of the Department of Hematologic Oncology and Blood Disorders. She specializes in hematopoietic cell transplant and caring for patients with malignant hematologic disorders. She is also heavily involved in laboratory-based transitional research.
