The rehabilitative staff at Carolinas HealthCare System played an integral part in combating a potentially devastating medical emergency for patient Robert Summerville.
Stroke is the number one cause of adult disability and the third leading cause of death in the United States.
A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that brings oxygen and nutrients to the brain either bursts (hemorrhagic stroke) or is clogged by a blood clot or some other mass (ischemic stroke). When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs, so it starts to die.
Our stroke teams work collaboratively with each patient to individually tailor care to address the patient's specific needs.
The goal of our comprehensive stroke rehabilitation programs is to get patients home at the highest level of independence possible.
