A spinal cord injury is caused by trauma or disease to the spinal cord, most often resulting in paralysis (loss of strength), loss of sensation (feeling) and control over body functions. Between 180,000 and 230,000 Americans are paralyzed as a result of spinal cord injury and an additional 7,800 suffer new injuries each year.
