WHAT TO TAKE TO THE HOSPITAL

On baby's arrival day, things may get a little hurried. It is best to have the hospital bag ready in advance.

The following list offers suggestions on what to pack:

  • Robe and nightgown if you prefer not to use hospital gowns
  • Underwear and nursing bra for breastfeeding
  • Toiletries (shampoo, toothbrush and toothpaste, deodorant, lotion, powder, hairbrush, makeup, etc.)
  • Sanitary napkins (particularly if a certain brand is preferred)
  • Comfortable going-home outfit for mother and baby
  • Books or cards to pass time if needed
  • Slippers and socks in case of cold feet
  • Camera and film
  • CD's, VHS tapes and DVD's for relaxation
  • Hair barrettes or headband to keep hair away from face
  • Hard candy to keep mother's mouth moist during labor
  • Tennis balls to help massage back muscles during labor
  • Personal items (such as a pillow) to make hospital stay more like home
  • Snacks for labor coach during labor and for mother after delivery
  • Phone numbers of people to call after baby's arrival
  • Infant safety seat for baby's ride home
  • Car window shade to protect infant's delicate skin from the sun
  • Phone number for insurance pre-authorization
  • Lip Balm for dry lips during and after labor

Pain management
Nonmedical pain management techniques such as breathing, visual imagery and massage.
Medical interventions include epidural or combined spinal epidural (CSE), local anesthesia or intravenous analgesics to ease labor pains.
For questions about traditional and/or walking epidurals, please consult your obstetrician.
