TRANSPLANT
The Transplant Center at Carolinas Medical
Center in Charlotte, N.C., has been active in transplantation since our first kidney
transplant in 1970. Recognizing the growing need for transplantation in patients with end-stage
kidney disease, we have developed a full-time transplantation faculty. Since 1986, we have also
included one of the busiest cardiac transplant programs in North and South Carolina,
performing heart procedures for neonate, pediatric and adult patients.
The Transplant Center receives organ donations via
LifeShare Of The Carolinas
, a hospital-based, not-for-profit organ procurement organization. LifeShare is designated by the federal government to serve 37 hospitals in a 23-county region of southwestern North Carolina and York County, S.C. It is a vital link between people who are waiting for transplants and potential donors.
We offer the following transplant programs:
Kidney Transplant Program
The Kidney Transplant Team, composed of surgeons, nephrologists, nurse clinicians, social workers, dietitians and pharmacists have performed more than 1,700 kidney transplants at Carolinas Medical Center (CMC).
Heart Transplant Program
Cardiovascular surgeons performed their first heart transplant at CMC in 1986. Since that time,
they have performed more than 375 heart transplants.
Liver Transplant Program
Liver transplantation was first performed at CMC in 1994. Since that time, more than 300 liver transplants have been performed.
Kidney/Pancreas & Pancreas After Kidney Transplant Program
The first pancreas transplant at CMC was performed in 1994 and the program has rapidly expanded over 81 kidney/pancreas transplants and three pancreas after kidney.
Every 13 minutes a new name is added to the national organ transplant waiting list.
In 2004, the Transplant Center performed 83 kidney, 17 heart, 24 liver and 5 kidney/pancreas procedures.
