LOW VISION PROGRAM
Carolinas Rehabilitation's Low Vision Program
provides participants with an assessment for optical and non-optical needs.
It has been shown that with the use of optical and non-optical aids, environmental adaptations
and training in the use of remaining vision, persons with low vision remain independent longer.
The program determines when follow-up care is recommended.
Below is a brief description of the resources available for Low Vision treatment.
- Optical Aids
Devices that use lenses or a combination of lenses to provide magnification.
There are five main kinds of optical aids: magnifying spectacles, hand and
stand magnifiers, telescopes, and close-circuit television.
- Non-Optical Aids
Non-optical devices, including large-print materials, check writing guides,
special lighting, enlarged telephone dials, high contrast watch faces and
auditory devices, e.g., talking watches, clocks and computers.
- Community Resources
List of government and private agencies that provide social services for
persons with low vision.
- Daily Living Strategies
Helpful household hints to improve the use of remaining vision to enhance
safety and independence.
- Home Visits
An occupational therapist will assess your home assist with making
modifications to improve your safety and performance in your home.
- Patient Education
This part of the program teaches you how to manage your daily needs by
maximizing the use of your remaining vision with optical and non-optical aids.
