THERAPEUTIC RECREATION

Therapeutic Recreation is a dimension of inpatient therapy that uses leisure activities to improve overall functional abilities. Therapeutic recreation uses aspects of mobility, cognition, communication, and community functioning to enhance overall quality of life and knowledge of leisure skills. By putting physical and mental faculties to work in a recreational environment, the rehabilitation process in greatly enhanced.

Both pediatric and adult patients at Carolinas Rehabilitation can enjoy leisure activities through individual or group sessions. These activities could include evening programming, community outings, sporting activities, or other therapeutic leisure activities.

Therapeutic Recreation provides opportunities for patients to progress through rehabilitation with the identification of new leisure pursuits and adaptations for those pursuits. These newly learned skills carry over to maximize their independence in the home, community, and work.
