SPASTICITY MANAGEMENT

Spasticity is a disabling condition that is characterized by stiff or rigid muscles and exaggerated deep tendon reflexes. This condition can interfere with muscular activity, gait, movement, walking or speech. Spasticity can be caused by cerebral palsy, brain damage, stroke, multiple sclerosis or an injury to the spinal cord.

The outpatient medical clinics at Carolinas Rehabilitation provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment of spasticity. The team consists of highly trained and specialized physicians, nurses and therapists whose goal is to individualize a treatment plan for each patient that result in:

  • Improved mobility
  • Increased independence
  • Reduction of pain and spasm frequency
  • Postponement or avoidance of surgery
  • Improved range of motion

Treatment options may include:

  • Range of motion exercise
  • Serial/inhibitive casting
  • Functional electrical stimulation
  • Intrathecal baclofen pump
  • Medication
  • EMG biofeedback
  • Botulinum toxin injections
  • Nerve/motor point blocks
  • Tendon transfer, lengthening, release, rhizotomy
