LYMPHEDEMA MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
The Lymphedema Management Program at Carolinas Rehabilitation began in 1996. Treatment providers include a team of physicians, nurses, occupational, and physical therapists with specialized training
in lymphedema and venous insufficiency. All patients undergo an initial evaluation by a physician or therapist to determine the proper course of treatment.
Carolinas Rehabilitation is a member of the National Lymphedema Network. The staff is trained and certified from recognized programs such as the Vodder School of the North America, the Academy of Lymphatic Studies, and the Lymphology Association of North America.
Lymphedema is the accumulation of protein rich fluid in the tissues that causes swelling most often in the arms and legs, but occasionally in other parts of the body. This chronic condition can develop when the lymph vessels or nodes that transport the lymph
are damaged or missing. In addition to swelling, symptoms of lymphedema may include a feeling of heaviness, skin changes, pain, infection, and difficulty with activities.
Treatments Provided:
- Manual lymph drainage- A gentle massage used to direct the fluid away from the swollen area.
- Compression bandaging- a structured wrapping technique which uses specialized bangages to place a graded pressure on the swollen extremity.
- Home exercise program instruction- An exercise program is developed to be performed while wearing the compression bandages in order to facilitate
the muscle pumping action in the swollen extremity and to enhance drainage.
- Patient education- Patient education is a crucial part of the program that teaches patients how to manage their lymphedema. Topics include precautions, preventive techniques
and home maintenance programs.
- Compression arguments- Following completion of the program, patients will be fitted with a garment that will be worn during the day to maintain
edema reduction.
