Many patients who have received treatment to cure or control cancer have suffered significant physical, emotional and psychological impacts. To help individuals and their families learn to adapt to the effects of cancer and cancer treatment, Blumenthal Cancer Center at Carolinas Medical Center hosts a Cancer Rehabilitation Program.

Typical areas affected by cancer and cancer treatment includes mobility, self-care, emotional well being, spirituality, vocational pursuits, and social interactions. The goals of rehabilitation are to regain maximum independence. In addition, patient and family education and support services are provided on a continual basis, family therapy, which focuses on coping with a loved one's medical condition, is an integral part of the program.

Certain cancer treatment may cause a swelling in the lymphatic system known as lymphedema. This swelling is caused by an accumulation of protein-rich fluid, that can be treated with various pressure and exercise techniques.

Evaluation and Treatment
Patients referred into the program will be evaluated and may receive:

  • Light massage (lymphedema)
  • Complex wrapping (lymphedema)
  • Exercise
  • Skin care techniques
  • Vocational training
  • Support

Support Programs:

Living With Cancer - A support group for any persons with cancer. Friends and family are also invited. Meets every Tuesday, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Quest - The Quest Program is a cancer wellness program developed to assist in recovering from cancer through exercise, education and relaxation techniques. Eight-week sessions are offered in partnership with the CMC-Health Centers located at the Jewish Community Center, Harris YMCA and the University City YMCA.

Supportive counseling - Individual and family counseling is available through Blumenthal Cancer Center.

Look Good…Feel Better Program - Open to women undergoing treatment for cancer. During the sessions trained cosmetologist use makeup, wigs, and scarves to help women cope and adjust to the side effects of treatment. This program is provided in conjunction with the American Cancer Society.
