To care for the child or adolescent with cancer and blood disorders, Blumenthal Cancer Center
has assembled a team of highly trained specialists within its Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Program.
This multidisciplinary team focuses on meeting the complex medical and emotional needs of young patients and
helping their families through the diagnosis, treatment and recovery phases of the disease. Pediatric patients
may be treated inpatient at The Children's Hospital at CMC or with outpatient appointments in the Children's
Speciality Center.
Over the last half of the 20th century, progress in pediatric cancer diagnosis and treatment has turned a once fatal disease into one that is now curable in most children. The Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Program is dedicated to providing excellence in treatment, patient care, research and education in an environment that respects and values each patient and family member.
The treatment plan prescribed will depend on the type of cancer or blood disorder, the extent of spread, and other individual factors. Most children will be treated with surgery, chemotherapy and or radiation therapy. More than 700 children with cancer or hematologic diseases have been treated at Blumenthal Cancer Center since 1999.
