Evaluation and Treatment
Patient evaluations are performed at the Medical Center Plaza on Mondays and Wednesdays. After the initial evaluation, each new patient is presented at the weekly Bone and Soft Tissue Tumor Group (BSTTG) team meeting and at successive meetings until the diagnosis is complete and treatment is initiated. Periodically, throughout treatment a patient may have his or her case re-evaluated at the weekly BSTTG to further evaluate or define his or her treatment options.

Imaging evaluations for these tumors may include routine x-rays, CT scans, MRI scans, as well as nuclear imaging testing including technesium bone scans. PET scans also are used when indicated. All tests and scans are coordinated at locations on the Carolinas Medical Center campus.

Research
The Musculoskeletal and Soft Tissue Tumor Program participates in a number of national research cooperative groups. Children who are diagnosed with bone of soft tissue sarcomas are offered the opportunity to participate in research trial conducted through the Children's Oncology Group. Adult research trials are available through the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group, the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group, and the Southwestern Oncology Group.
