NOVALIS® SHAPED BEAM SURGERY™ CENTER AT CAROLINAS MEDICAL CENTER
CMC's Neuroscience and Spine Institute houses revolutionary new technology comprising four state-of-the-art radiosurgery and radiotherapy applications in a single integrated system. Unlike those that are "pieced" together over time, this four-in-one system has the advantage of producing the highest degree of accuracy in treatment planning and delivery for the management of a wide array of cancers as well as targeted approaches for brain tumors, vascular malformations, and other neurologic disorders. In addition to the newest generation linear accelerator which delivers conventional external radiation, the Shaped Beam Surgery system includes:
- Cranial Stereotactic Radiosurgery - Also known as "knifeless" surgery, delivers radiation to tumors and vascular malformations in the brain without damaging normal structures;
- Extracranial or Body Radiosurgery - The newest application, expands the precision of stereotactic cranial radiosurgery to all areas of the body;
- Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) - Uses a dynamic conformal dose delivery technology to precisely tailor radiation treatments to even the most irregularly shaped lesions, thus allowing maximal dosing without damaging surrounding organs.
Novalis Shaped Beam Surgery is the most advanced approach to stereotactic radiosurgery and radiotherapy
available today. Novalis continuously shapes the treatment beam to match the size and shape of your tumor
or AVM from all angles, ensuring that the tumor receives the full prescription dose while protecting healthy
tissue. Shaping the beam to the tumor is the latest and most advanced approach for stereotactic
radiosurgery. The procedure involved is virtually painless, avoids lengthy hospital stays or
rehabilitation and you remain awake for the entire procedure. Patients can undergo treatment in the
morning and return to their normal routine by the afternoon.
