Treatment Philosophy
Chemical Dependency is a progressive, medical disease that if not treated, can be fatal. We believe that Chemical Dependency is a treatable disease. Our treatment programs are designed for adults 18 and older who are suffering from the debilitating effects of alcoholism and drug addiction. We utilize a 12-step recovery philosophy and focus on the mental, physical and spiritual well-being of each patient. At BHC First Step at Carolinas Medical Center-Union we emphasize behavioral changes that are supportive of healthier lifestyles and the development of improved self-esteem.

- Detoxification: Our most intensive level of care, this inpatient program is medically supervised by a physician and nursing staff.
- Residential/Rehabilitation: This inpatient program is for people who are able to function with little to no medical monitoring. Patients are required to actively participate in treatment.
- 23-Hour Observation: This provides crisis stabilization and assessment. Is often used to further evaluate a patient's clinical needs.
- Intensive Outpatient Program Level I (IOP-R): This unique program is designed for individuals who meet the criteria for Intensive Outpatient but also need a caring, supportive environment on a 24-hour-a-day, 7-day-a-week basis. Patients are responsible for respite care (room and board) on a fee-for-service basis.
- Intensive Outpatient Program Level II: This program is characterized primarily by a group therapy approach with a core focus on relapse prevention. This level of care is for medically stable adults who have an adequate support system.
- Outpatient Treatment: Our traditional outpatient treatment services are used as a step-down from a higher level of care, or for DWI /court-ordered treatment needs.
Patients who successfully complete their treatment may participate in our weekly Continuing Care program.
