THE MCKAY UROLOGY RESEARCH FUND
McKay Urology Leads the Way in Research to Help Save Lives
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among American men. In fact, 33 percent of all male cancer cases diagnosed in the United States are prostate cancer. In addition, prostate cancer currently remains the second-leading cancer-related cause of death in men, accounting for 10 percent of all male cancer deaths. However, the number of patients presenting with advanced, metastatic prostate cancer has declined dramatically (from 20 percent to 15 percent). In addition, the number of prostate cancer deaths has been decreasing at a rate of 4 percent per year since 1994. This improving survival rate is a direct result of advancements brought about by clinical and laboratory research.

The McKay Urology Research Fund: Our Partner in Progress
To further these advancements, McKay Urology is committed to ongoing research. Supporting this effort, the McKay Urology Research Fund provides long-term funding for urologic research, conducted at Carolinas Medical Center and CMC's Cannon Research Center. With the support of individuals, corporations and foundations in the community, the McKay Urology Research Fund provides vital resources for laboratory and clinical research. McKay Urology invests these resources in the relentless pursuit of advanced detection, treatment, and prevention of prostate cancer. Through the support of the Fund, McKay Urology has also developed major clinical research programs in the areas of bladder dysfunction and renal cancer. Thanks to the McKay Urology Research Fund, McKay Urology is a significant national contributor to urologic research.
A Brief History of Philanthropy in Support of the McKay Urology Research Fund
Since its inception in 1995, the McKay Urology Research Fund has received over $1.6 million in contributions, bequests, and matching gifts. Most prominently, the Fund was the charitable beneficiary from 1999 to 2002 of the annual Rush Dickson Invitational pro-am golf tournament, which raised net proceeds of $1.1 million over this four-year period.
In turn, the McKay Fund has provided over $800,000 in grant support to Carolinas Medical Center over the last eight years, funding salaries, supplies, and laboratory space for researchers engaged in the fight against prostate cancer and other urologic diseases.
The McKay Urology Research Fund currently maintains a balance of over $1 million. However, far more than that is needed to endow the annual expenses associated with urologic clinical and laboratory research conducted at Carolinas Medical Center.
If you would like to discuss a contribution to the Fund please contact Scott Kerr of the Carolinas HealthCare Foundation (CHF) at 704-355-4048 or, to make a donation online, visit CHF's Web site at www.givechf.org.
