ORTHOPAEDIC TRAUMA SURGERY

The Division of Orthopaedic Trauma in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Carolinas Medical Center is an integral component of the Ross Trauma Center. The Orthopaedic Trauma Service provides the Ross Trauma Center expertise in the management of musculoskeletal injury and complications and is responsible for the management of isolated fractures.

The Division of Orthopaedic Trauma consists of three fellowship trained full-time orthopaedic traumatologists. The orthopaedic traumatologists are supported by an additional seven orthopaedic surgeons who participate in the 24 hour/day call schedule. These individuals are all specialists trained in orthopaedics who provide expert opinion in their areas of specialty. The Orthopaedic Trauma Service manages complex pelvic and acetabular fractures and periarticular fractures of both the upper and lower extremities. The orthopaedic traumatologists have expertise in all areas of musculoskeletal injury except for hand and spine. The Orthopaedic Trauma Team also consists of residents and fellows who are supervised by the orthopaedic traumatologists.

The Orthopaedic Trauma Service maintains a strong educational and research program. Weekly case conference discussions provide the staff opportunities to stay current with new techniques and address issues that arise with the delivery of care. In collaboration with Carolinas Medical Center's statistical and epidemiological support services, the orthopaedic clinical research program is a leader in prospective outcome studies. The program is particularly interested in establishing multicenter trials throughout the Southeast. A strong basic science laboratory program supports research of bio-materials and fracture healing through modern techniques of gene array technology.

The Division of Orthopaedic Trauma supports an ACGME accredited one year fellowship in Orthopedic Trauma. The focus of the fellowship is to development of academic orthopedic traumatologists with expertise in complex fracture management and clinical prospective outcome research.
