INJURY PREVENTION

Injury is a major public health problem in the United States and is the leading cause of death among Americans aged 1 to 44. Because injuries disproportionately affect the young, they result in more productive years of life lost than any other cause. At one time considered "accidents", we now realize that injuries, like diseases, follow patterns. By studying these patterns we learn to predict injuries and are better able to devise methods to prevent them.

Carolinas Medical Center strives to prevent injury, disability, and death, and the costs associated with injury, through a wide variety of activities. These activities combine research, education, program development, implementation and evaluation, and public policy advocacy, performed both singly and in collaboration with other organizations.

Carolinas Center For Injury Prevention
Carolinas Center for Injury Prevention is a leader in the region for injury data and prevention strategies. Established in 1999, the center's mission is to save lives, prevent injury, improve quality of life and reduce costs due to injury. The center was established as a resource for injury prevention information, research and programming. The program-related activities are conducted through the Mecklenburg Safe Communities Program, a coalition of more than 40 members representing more than 30 organizations and individuals in the community. This collaboration allows for more effective and efficient injury prevention activities in the community. For more information or for a copy of the report, call 704-355-7098.
