SAFETY TOWN
Safety Town is an injury prevention program taught to kindergarten students in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system. Safety Town teaches children pedestrian safety, bicycle safety, and seatbelt safety and allows them to practice these lessons as they navigate through a makeshift village on foot and on "Big Wheels."
The Safety Town curriculum addresses several kindergarten objectives contained in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for healthful living. These include describing health risks for this age group, the correct use of seat belts and bicycle helmets, the meaning of traffic signs and signals and how to respond appropriately to them and how to get help in an emergency.
Safety Town has been supported by CMC's Hemby Pediatric Trauma Institute since it began in 1989.
