  • According to U.S. News & World Report, Drs. William Bockenek, Vu Nguyen and Sonya Rissmiller were ranked in the Top 10 percent of all PM&R physicians for 2012.
  • Drs. William Bockenek and Vu Nguyen were included in the Charlotte Business Journal’s Best Doctors List 2012.
  • Dr. Tobias Tsai was awarded the Corbett Ryan Pathways Pioneer Award by the American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine’s (AACPDM) and the Pathways Awareness Foundation at their annual meeting in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, September 12-15, 2012.
  • Tami Guerrier, Assistant Research Director, was appointed to the North Carolina Board of the Brain Injury Association.

Research Activities/Grants

  • Dr. Vu Nguyen is the Principle Investigator of the SPR Therapeutics sponsored SmartPatch study “Pivotal Study of SMARTPATCH Peripheral Nerve Stimulation” 
  • Dr. Vu Nguyen is the Principle Investigator of the Allergan sponsored Botox study “Adult Post-Stroke Lower Limb Spasticity Study”
  • Dr. Vu Nguyen is the Principle Investigator, in collaboration with Duke University, in a Cannon Research Center Grant for the study Stroke Rehabilitation Outcomes Evaluation – A Stroke Rehabilitation Database.
  • The Research Department of PM&R was awarded funding as a Traumatic Brain Injury Model System Follow-Up site through the Department of Education, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitation Services, National Institute on Disability Rehabilitation and Research (NIDDR).
  • Dr. Mark Hirsch is Principal Investigator of study titled:  “Physical activity and traumatic brain injury: Preliminary studies.” IRB File #02-12-04E.
  • Dr. Mark Hirsch is Principal Investigator on the study titled: “Health information needs after mTBI: A participatory research exploration” and co-investigator of two studies titled: “Falls prevention technology research and development project”, and “Is dual tasking a behavioral biomarker for detecting residual effects of mTBI on postural control?”
  • Dr. Mark Hirsch received a grant from the Duke Foundation to investigate the experience of exercise in Parkinson’s disease from the perspective of patients with PD and spouses. The study is titled: “Power over Parkinson’s: The experience of community-based exercise for people with idiopathic Parkinson’s disease.”

  • Dr. Hirsch gave two undergraduate lectures on Parkinson’s disease in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, UNCC, Thursday, November 15 and 20, 2012 (MEGR 7090/8090 Mechanics of Human Locomotor System).
  • Dr. Lori Grafton participated as a guest speaker at the 2nd International Symposium on Neurorehabilitation in Valencia, Spain on October 18-19, 2012.
  • Dr. Vishwa Raj presented a poster entitled “Rehabilitation of Brain Tumor Patients: Outcomes based on Discharge Disposition at a Freestanding Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility in the United States” at the 10th Acta Oncologica Symposium: European Cancer Rehabilitation & Survivorship Symposium 2012, in Copenhagen, Denmark.
  • Dr. Vishwa Raj and Suzanne Snyder presented “Successful Medical Necessity Documentation Improvement Strategies” at the 10th Annual Medical Rehabilitation Education Conference and Expo of the American Medical Rehabilitation Providers Association on October 15, 2012.
  • Dr. Vishwa Raj Suzanne Snyder, and Robin Lilly presented “Strategies for Successful Integration of Inpatient Rehabilitation into the Oncological Spectrum of Care” at the Best Practices in Cancer Survivorship and Cancer Rehabilitation, Mindstream Conference on July 19, 2012.
  • Dr. Vishwa Raj presented “Methods to Determine Appropriate Utilization of Ancillary Rehabilitation Services in the Oncological Spectrum of Care. Best Practices in Cancer Survivorship and Cancer Rehabilitation”, at Mindstream Conference on November 15, 2012.

Local Community/Presentation

  • Dr. Lori Grafton partnered with physicians from the medic, emergency room, sports medicine and trauma departments to develop the mild traumatic brain injury guidelines for the Carolinas Trauma Network.
  • Over 70 Carolinas Rehabilitation physicians, employees, and family members participated in the “Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure” in October 2012 and raised over $3,800.
  • Dr. Mark Hirsch directed RENEW Carolinas Parkinson’s disease initiative. Through this initiative, training on evidence- based physical therapy and exercise prescription for 21 physical therapists and 24 YMCA staff representing 10 Carolinas Rehabilitation clinics, CMC-Neurology, and six participating YMCA Medical Referral Programs. Grant support was provided by the Park Foundation and Carolinas HealthCare Foundation.
  • The Research Department of PM&R held the “Help Me, Help You” conference on September 28-29, 2012.  The conference, sponsored by Carolinas Rehabilitation and supported through the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitation Services, National Institute on Disability Rehabilitation, taught participants how to build better relationships after brain injury.
  • Dr. Hirsch (along with Mohammed Sanjak, PT, PhD, Sherry Jones, Richard Reinholz, and Jennifer Gardner) gave an invited lecture titled “RENEW Carolinas Parkinson disease Initiative: The role of exercise” during the Second Annual Symposium on Living Well with Parkinson’s Disease hosted by the Department of Neurology at CMC, November 10, 2012.
