Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute is committed to the communities we serve. Our physicians and staff participate in a variety of health and wellness events throughout the region, helping patients and families learn how to lead heart healthy lifestyles. Some of our regular outreach activities include:
Help Us Fight Cardiovascular Disease
Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of death in America today, claiming the lives of nearly one million men and women each year. This disease also accounts for almost six million hospitalizations, annually. Locally, Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute has the medical expertise, equipment and facilities to address this disease and provide both acute care as well as much needed preventive and rehabilitative care for patients in our community.

Heart of a Champion Day
Like any disease, the best weapon to fight heart disease is early detection. Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute, in collaboration with Levine Children's Hospital, Carolinas Medical Center, OrthoCarolina and Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools hold Heart of a Champion Day annually to detect heart disease in high school athletes. Heart of a Champion, held at various schools in the region, is a free sports specific health screening and educational program.. The screenings include a review of the athlete's medical history, a sports specific medical and musculoskeletal exam, a heart exam, and a vision test. All student athletes receive an electrocardiogram (ECG), which traces the heart's electrical activity. They also receive an echocardiogram, much like an ultrasound of the heart. A heart screening is necessary because traditional sports screenings may not reliably detect heart conditions that could affect an athlete's ability to participate in sports. The program also includes an educational component to help students at risk of developing heart disease learn to make healthy lifestyle medications.
Walk with a Doc
Did you know that leading a sedentary lifestyle puts you at risk for heart disease? Our physicians deliver this message to patients daily, but now, we are helping our patients make lifestyle changes to fight heart disease. Just Walk with a Doc, created by board-certified cardiologist Dr. David Sabgir, is a non-profit program for anyone interested in taking steps towards their health. Every third Saturday of the month, Sanger physicians gather in a local park to walk with patients and the community. Each walk will begin with a brief welcome from a physician and a talk about the importance of exercise to cardiovascular health.
Join us for cardiovascular fitness, conversation and a chance to connect with the community!
Community Education and Screening Events
Our physicians are committed to building healthier communities through heart disease prevention education. In addition to patient care, our physicians participate in a number of wellness events giving talks, seminars and presentations about the lifestyle modifications that can prevent heart disease. Some of the events we participate in annually include Dinner with a Doc, speaker series at local YMCA branches, faith community seminars, and much more.
Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute also participates and hosts a number of community screening events throughout the region. Partnering with local hospitals, several of our events offer comprehensive screening services including blood pressure checks, glucose screening, and cholesterol scoring. We also attend a variety of community health fairs throughout the year to offer these services free of charge.
Cupid's Cup 5k & Fitness walk
Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute is a sponsor of the Cupid's Cup 5K & Fitness Walk held annually in February to benefit the cardiovascular health and rehabilitation programs at Carolinas Medical Center.
