CANNON RESEARCH CENTER
The James G. Cannon Research Center, part of Carolinas HealthCare System, is
a 58,000-square-foot building located on the campus of Carolinas Medical
Center. We provide a central research facility for basic science and clinical
medicine.
Cannon Research Center has 172 research and support personnel, 32 of whom have
Ph.D. degrees. Our purpose is to engage in clinical and biomedical research and
development, and to improve the quality and cost-effectiveness of healthcare, as
described in the "Mission Statement" below. In addition to the strong commitment
of Carolinas HealthCare, a growing array of external grants and contracts, as well
as endowments from charitable gifts and bequests, provide the financial base for an
annual research budget of $19 million. Because almost all of the efforts within
Cannon Research Center are directed toward usable, practical solutions to problems
encountered in clinical practice, a uniquely flexible approach characterizes our
determination to commercialize our discoveries.
The Clinical Research Office, centrally located on the Carolinas Medical Center
campus, coordinates the diverse clinical research activities within Carolinas
HealthCare. Ranging from pediatrics to geriatrics, this clinical research
covers all disease modalities.

Adopted January 3, 1996
Statement of Purpose
Cannon Research Center provides facilities as well as both institutional and external support for a community of scientific investigators engaged in various fields of clinical and biomedical research. Our purpose is to improve the quality and cost-effectiveness of healthcare.
Core Values
- Research at Cannon Research Center will be goals-oriented and of the highest scientific quality and integrity, and will meet all relevant ethical standards.
- All our scientific investigators will be in close communication with the clinical staff of Carolinas Medical Center so that each will be aware of and supportive of the others' needs and capabilities.
- Biomedical research groups will be built around the participating medical departments offering medical residency training at Carolinas Medical Center, but will look for and nurture opportunities for multi-disciplinary research, and will share equipment and resources insofar as possible.
- Publication of research results in scholarly, peer-reviewed journals will create a stronger reputation for our scientists and our institution.
- Protection and commercialization of qualified inventions will not only generate additional sources of research funding, but will also improve the likelihood of these worthwhile inventions being available for clinical use and benefit to society. Not all projects must be suitable for patent protection and commercialization, but those which do qualify will be given appropriate attention in order to fulfill our obligations of stewardship.
- Grants and contracts should be pursued aggressively in order to build substantial external funding for clinical and biomedical research at Cannon Research Center, and to further enhance our reputation. Not all projects will be expected to be suitable and ready for outside sponsorship, but those which are qualified will get encouragement and assistance for developing competitive proposals.
- Charlotte is a generous community with a solid record of supporting its many centers of excellence; therefore, we will communicate our research interests and achievements to the benevolent leadership of Charlotte in order to cultivate among them a productive relationship of charitable gifts and bequests in which both they and we will take great pride and satisfaction.
- Project management will be thoughtful, timely, complete and financially responsible.
- To the extent possible, promotion of business enterprises which grow out of our research will seek to create expanding resources for this city and region.
- Collaborations with other academic institutions are highly prized, because they strengthen the interaction of ideas and resources of all partners.
