Learn How You Can Help

Carolinas Rehabilitation’s team of professionals provides advanced, personalized care and strives for three key objectives:

  • To care for people with disabilities
  • To offer specialized training for physicians and other healthcare providers
  • To conduct original research to minimize the impact of disabling illnesses and trauma

As a not-for-profit hospital, Carolinas Rehabilitation relies on philanthropic support to bolster innovative programs and services for its patients and families.

Whether patient, family member or simply an advocate for groundbreaking rehabilitative medicine, you can make a difference by helping fund special clinical programs, equipment and technological advances.

Carolinas Rehabilitation has established three funds to support various areas of our organization:

Adaptive Sports and Adventures (ASAP) Fund

This fund helps support the ASAP Program which offers outdoor recreation and sports activities for disabled youth and adults. Activities include water skiing, hand cycling, snow skiing, rugby and much more. Learn more about ASAP.

Carolinas Rehabilitation Fund

This fund provides annual support of special professional education opportunities for our nursing and therapy staff. It also provides funding for patient/family support and community outreach activities.

W. Duke Kimbrell Rehabilitation Research Endowment

Initiated in 2009 with a $300,000 "challenge" pledge from W. Duke Kimbrell, chairman of Parkdale Mills in Gastonia, NC, this endowment advances ground-breaking research programs conducted by our faculty physicians. Currently, all gifts to the endowment are being matched 100 percent by the W. Duke Kimbrell Family Foundation. Learn more about the research being conducted by our faculty.

You may also donate without specifying a fund, allowing Carolinas Rehabilitation to use the funds where the need is greatest.

H.O.P.E. Society

Everyone who donates to Carolinas Rehabilitation becomes a member of the H.O.P.E. Society. The H.O.P.E. Society is comprised of patients, patient families, healthcare providers and friends who share Carolinas Rehabilitation's commitment of providing H.O.P.E. (Healing, Optimism, Possibilities and Encouragement) for rehabilitation patients. Members receive quarterly newsletters and are invited to special events hosted by Carolinas Rehabilitation.

Our staff is always available to assist you in achieving your tax, estate planning and charitable giving objectives. To discuss giving opportunities, call 704-355-4048 or contact us online.

W. Duke Kimbrell Award

In honor of Mr. Kimbrell’s generosity, we have established the W. Duke Kimbrell Award for Outstanding Support of Carolinas Rehabilitation.

This award is presented each year during our annual Hearts for Rehab Friendraiser. In 2014, the award was presented to the Cannon Foundation.

The Cannon Foundation has been a generous donor to Carolinas HealthCare System since 2006.

In 2011, the Cannon Foundation made a $50,000 gift to Carolinas Rehabilitation in support of the pediatric component of the robot-assisted treadmill system that helps to restore walking capability in patients who have suffered stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, and other neurological disorders.
